From the sea to the desert to the mountains
I would strongly recommend a spring trip from the Los Angeles area to Barstow, staying overnight and then visiting Big Bear Lake up in the mountains, before heading back to LA. In that trip, you'll expose yourself to three profoundly different environments.

Los Angeles is of course world famous as a vacation spot, but even we Angelenos need to get away from it all now and again. A trip straight from LA county through the desert and up to Big Bear Lake in the heart of San Bernardino National Forest can certainly be done in one day, but it's a whole lot of driving at once and you'll never get to really appreciate the desert environment on the way. I would suggest making Barstow, rather than Big Bear Lake, the main part of your trip.

Barstow is a quaint and unaffected desert town, with a charm all its own. it's a unique area, with a lot of history. Suburban streets will suddenly give way to stretches of desert that stretch off to the horizon. The town can become painfully ... more
